The Acne Issue


Androgen hormones are associated with a large variety of skin diseases. Many skin disorders are, in fact, triggered by the excessive levels of androgen in the body. The hormones stimulate the sebaceous glands to produce and secrete sebum, which makes skin oily and thus prone to developing acne. The sebum produced accumulates by the hair follicles in the dermis.

It goes up the hair shafts until it reaches the external layer of the skin. This can cause dirt and bacteria to build up on the skin by plugging up the follicles and the hair shafts, creating an ideal breeding ground for germs. Treating acne requires the use of topical medications, however, since many hormonal changes occur in the bodies of teenagers, the response to the medications can change, too. This is the reason dermatologists usually keep changing their prescriptions to teenagers who are suffering from acne.
